It’s a scenario that’s played out for many people before: You ended up having unprotected sex and then found out that your partner had genital herpes. Symptoms weren’t evident at the time, so neither of you suspected a thing. You then went out and got a genital herpes test that wound up coming back positive, at which point you started living in fear of the genital herpes symptoms that would undoubtedly pop up to haunt you.

But rather than find yourself suffering from genital herpes symptoms, you ended up going about your day to day life unaffected by the disease. And at this point, you may be starting to question the results of your STD test. But before you run out to repeat the STD testing process, you should know that genital herpes symptoms don’t always surface following infection. In fact, a large percentage of people who have the disease don’t even know it because their genital herpes symptoms are non-existent.

So what does this mean for you? Unfortunately, just because you’ve yet to experience genital herpes symptoms to date doesn’t mean that you won’t in the future. On the other hand, you may end up going through life without having genital herpes symptoms at all. But if that’s the case, remember that you can still give the disease to a sexual partner if you have unprotected sex. Genital herpes symptoms don’t need to be present for transmission to occur, so even if you do remain symptom-free for the rest of your life, you’ll need to use caution if you want to spare others from getting the disease.
