Syphilis Treatment Process
Syphilis is curable with a shot of antibiotics, typically penicillin. Our in-house physicians are available to direct you to the appropriate treatment options.
Syphilis Window Period
The window period for syphilis, the time between possible exposure and when the test can accurately detect the infection, is 3 to 6 weeks.
Syphilis Symptoms
Symptoms of syphilis vary depending on the stage of infection. The primary stage of syphilis is characterized by a single, raised sore known as a chancre. The second stage is marked by a red rash and open, syphilitic warts. Those experiencing secondary syphilis may also experience fatigue, malaise, and swollen lymph nodes. In the latent or hidden stage, syphilis symptoms will disappear, but infection is still present. The final stage, the tertiary stage, will cause permanent heart, brain, and organ damage if left untreated.
Syphilis Test Recommendations
Syphilis testing is recommended as part of a routine STD screen for all sexually active adults and pregnant women. High risk populations, such as men who have sex with other men, those with multiple partners, and African Americans, should be tested for syphilis more frequently. Anyone concerned of syphilis exposure should also test accordingly.
Syphilis Test Details
The blood test for syphilis is known as the Rapid Plasma Reagin test, detecting the presence of syphilis antibodies. If a positive result is detected, we automatically perform a confirmation test using the Fluorescent Treponemal Antibody. This confirmation test can identify whether the positive syphilis test result is from a current or past infection.

* ABOUT HIV TESTING
The HIV early detection test is a DNA-based test that can detect the virus as early as two weeks after possible exposure. However, our physician's recommend pairing the early detection test with the HIV Standard test, which is considered the "gold standard" in HIV screening. However, it may take up to 12 weeks for the HIV Standard test to provide accurate results. Repeat HIV testing is recommended for sexually active adults with multiple partners or concern of exposure.
