Most STD testing campaigns are designed to target sexually active people in their teens, 20s, and 30s. After all, younger people have historically been associated with higher infection rates and less responsible sexual habits. But sexually active members of the over-50 crowd shouldn’t let themselves off the hook when it comes to STD testing. According to recently published data, STD infection rates have been on the rise among those over 50, and part of the reason has to do with the stigma surrounding STD testing in older folks.

Whereas medical professionals are often quick to promote STD testing among their young adult patients, many don’t think to broach the topic of STD testing with those who are older. But clearly, the over-50 crowd can use a significant push in that arena. Of course, nobody wants to begrudge older folks the ability to maintain healthy sex lives. But when it comes to STD testing and responsible sexual practices, being over 50 doesn’t mean that you don’t have to be vigilant about your sexual health.
