STD testing and oral herpes testing can diagnose those with HSV-1, the virus that causes oral herpes, in the absence of symptoms. Some people will remain asymptomatic forever despite a positive diagnosis through STD testing, while others might have one or two cold sores in their life.
Some unlucky few are forced to deal with painful, unsightly cold sores much more often—upwards of one per month. New research suggests those who are more prone to cold sores may have their genes to blame.
The gene is called C21orf91, or to us laymen, the Cold Sore Susceptibility Gene 1 (CSSG1). The discovery of this gene is significant in understanding how viruses attack the body. However, researchers have yet to determine exactly how this gene contributes to the frequency in which person experiences cold sores. Further research can also help determine what role this gene plays in cases of HSV-2, the virus that causes genital herpes.
If you are one of the unfortunate people who suffer from frequent cold sores, don’t worry. Treatment is available to reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms. However, if you are experiencing cold sores, STD testing should be performed to determine whether the infection is caused by oral herpes or genital herpes.
