First, a note on terminology: herpes zoster is not the same as vaginal herpes (also known as HSV-2 or genital herpes). In fact, herpes zoster is not an STD. People often confuse herpes zoster with genital herpes. So, no link between herpes zoster and an increased risk for HIV/AIDS. However, there is a link between genital herpes and HIV/AIDS.
First, a few stats about genital herpes:
- 16.2% of the general population has genital herpes.
- 39.2% of the African American population is infected with genital herpes
- 48% of black women are infected with genital herpes
- More women than men are affected across the board: female bodies are just more likely to contract genital herpes
The link between genital or vaginal herpes and HIV/AIDs
People infected with genital herpes (again, NOT herpes zoster) are more susceptible to HIV infection. And people with HIV become more infectious if they contract genital herpes. What’s more:
- Many people who have genital herpes show no symptoms.
- Genital herpes can be passed between partners between herpes outbreaks
- Genital herpes can be treated to reduce symptoms
- There is no cure for genital herpes
