Depends. There are two types of herpes tests: IgM and IgG. The IgM test is NOT type specific so it does not differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2. If you tested positive with an IgM test, it could be referring to an oral (HSV-1) or genital (HSV-2) infection. The IgG test is type specific and tests exclusively for oral or genital herpes. The IgG test is the most accurate.
If you tested positive for HSV-2, there is a possibility for false positive results. Herpes test results are based on an index value and recent research suggests that some people testing positive with an index value of 1.1-3.5 actually do not have HSV-2. To reduce the possibility of false positives, there is a new, FDA approved herpes confirmation test. This test (also called the Herpes Inhibition test) is 98% accurate and is recommend to confirm the results of those who test positive within the specified range, especially if the person has never had symptoms.
