I am a gay man and just tested positive for genital herpes. During anal sex, I assume the "bottom" position. Can I transmit the virus to my partner during anal sex, or only if he has contact with my penis?

That's exactly right. Visualize the area a pair of small shorts would cover, and herpes virus could reasonably be active anywhere there.
