Default Why am I embarrassed?

I have an STD. I took medicine, I'm cured, but the emotional part is still with me. Why do I feel, I don't know, take your pick...angry, afraid, ashamed. I didn't do anything wrong! I KNOW I didn't do anything wrong, but still I have all these emotions.

How do you deal with things? How long did it take you to get over your emotions? Why do we do this to ourselves?

Hi hockeygirl,

I think you feel that way because we're brought up to believe sex is bad and that you must have done something wrong. You're for sure not alone in feeling way, I know. Everybody, or almost everybody, has sex and there is no sure way to avoid STDs. Don't be too hard on yourself, but I'm a fine one to talk, as I've gone through it too.

Hang in there.

Exactly! Troy has it right. See, STDs happen to "other" people. We're conditioned to think it means you've been promiscuous, you did something you shouldn't have, etc etc. The reality is people get STDs because they do normal things, and you are at risk even with one or two partners. It's like saying you did something wrong because you got on a bus in the winter and caught a cold.

Your friends are right, hockeygirl!! Your feelings are TOTALLY normal and we live in a society that unfortunately makes us associate sex with shame, but it's greatly unfounded and completely untrue!! You did the right thing by getting tested and taking care of your health. You have absolutely nothing to be embarassed or ashamed or sorry about! Keep your chin up and remember to always stay true to yourself. Do all you need to do to take care of your personal, physical, and emotional well-being and surround yourself with people who respect and support you. I know you'll be feeling better in no time and you can always come here if you're in need of advice or a friend or support through any tough times. Remember, we all feel low sometimes and it helps to remind yourself that "this too shall pass."
