Default Syphilis Tests

Hey everyone,

Someone I know was diagnosed with syphilis, and she is definitely NOT someone you'd ever think would be at risk. She's shocked and really down about it, and really everyone who knows her feels the same way.

I've heard so much about HIV, chlamydia, herpes, and all that but you don't really hear much about syphilis. Anyway, it scared the #$%^ out of me because if she's at risk and didn't know then maybe so am I.

I found this site when I looked online for STD testing and was glad to see this forum exists. I want to test for different STDs, but really, how did she get syphilis? Isn't that like an old time type of STD?

Thanks!!

Syphilis has actually been on the rise these last few years. According to the CDC, syphilis has increased 39% since 2006 (wow!). But just like any other STD, syphilis is passed through unprotected sex. Your risk of syphilis can be reduced by using a latex condom, however, syphilis can be passed through sores that may be located on areas not covered by condoms.

Syphilis is most common among men who have sex with other men and African Americans. Even if you don't fit either demographics, you are still at risk for syphilis if you are sexually active. Fortunately, syphilis is curable. It's important to detect it early beacue it can cause serious complications.

With the resurgance of syphilis, it's a good idea to get tested as part of your annual screening.

Syphilis is sneaky in a lot of ways. The symptoms caused by primary and secondary syphilis will go away, even without treatment, but the infection remains without antibiotics. It's also becoming more of an issue for women.
