Good question. In order to test for Trichomoniasis, healthcare providers test for trichomoniasis by taking a swab of the vagina or urethra and then looking at it under a microscope. This process is called a wet mount, and the same sample may also be used to detect yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis.
Since not all women with trichomoniasis will have visible organisms in a wet mount, doctors may also culture the vaginal secretions in a special medium. Trichomoniasis can also cause irritation of the cervix, which may be spotted by a doctor doing a gynecological exam. |

Thankfully they don't necessarily need a swab anymore.
There are now urine tests that are just as accurate for detecting Trich DNA as swabs. We're working with the national labs to create a method to get tested for Trich, but for now because the recommended collection method on the test is a still a swab the national labs are unable to collect a Trich sample at their service centers. |
