Most STD testing campaigns are designed to target sexually active people in their teens, 20s, and 30s. After all, younger people have historically been associated with higher infection rates and less responsible sexual habits. But sexually active members of the over-50 crowd shouldn’t let themselves off the hook when it comes to STD testing. According to recently published data, STD infection rates have been on the rise among those over 50, and part of the reason has to do with the stigma surrounding STD testing in older folks.

For the first time this past decade, national syphilis infection rates declined in 2010, dropping 1.6 percent overall as compared to the previous year. While this news is somewhat encouraging, it doesn’t negate the need for STD testing on a whole. In fact, the drop in syphilis was mostly attributed to women, whose infection rates fell by 20 percent last year. Men, on the other hand, showed an upsurge in syphilis cases, with an increased rate of 1.3 percent. What this means is that those at risk for syphilis should continue to make STD testing a priority.

It's no secret that STD testing can help you protect your sexual health, but did you know that it can also help you avoid giving off an unpleasant smell? According to research recently published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, men with certain STDs may be more likely to emit unpleasant bodily odors than those who aren't infected.

That quote is from a report released last week by CDC, STD Trends in the United States, 2010.

This week the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the body that advises federal health officials on vaccine-preventable diseases, recommended that males be routinely vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV).

It seems obvious, doesn’t it? You don’t know if you have a disease or condition, so take a test, figure it out, and get treated if needed. Simple, no problem.
